Why DIY Fitting Works
While professional fittings offer precision, understanding the basics can get you 80% of the way there. This guide covers the fundamentals you can test yourself.
1. Determine Your Shaft Flex
Swing Speed Test
Use a launch monitor or estimate based on driver distance:
- Under 200 yards: Senior/Light
- 200-230 yards: Regular
- 230-260 yards: Stiff
- Over 260 yards: Extra Stiff
Bend Test
Try bending the shaft at the grip end:
- Easy bend: Light/Senior
- Moderate bend: Regular
- Little bend: Stiff
- No bend: Extra Stiff
2. Check Lie Angle
The Wall Test
- Stand in your normal address position
- Have someone place a board flat on the ground along your toes
- Check where the sole of the club contacts the board
- If the toe points up: Lie angle too flat
- If the heel lifts: Lie angle too upright
3. Measure Grip Size
See our detailed Grip Size Guide for complete instructions.
4. Determine Loft
Driver Loft
Match your launch angle to optimal carry:
- High swing speed (110+ mph): 8.5-9.5°
- Medium swing speed (95-110 mph): 10-11°
- Lower swing speed (under 95 mph): 12-13°
5. Shaft Length
Standard length works for most, but consider:
- Height under 5’6″: Consider -0.5″ to -1″
- Height 5’6″-6’0″: Standard
- Height over 6’0″: Consider +0.5″ to +1″
6. Test and Adjust
- Track your shots for 2-3 rounds
- Note any consistent misses (push, pull, fat, thin)
- Make one adjustment at a time
- Retest for 2 more rounds
Pro Tip: Keep a fitting journal with your specs and performance notes.
